Google recently deployed a feature called Homework Help<\/a>, which appears in the address bar in Canvas or similar educational sites, inviting students to highlight text or a region of their screen to conduct an on-the-fly AI search. While there have been some reports that Google removed this feature (due in large part to concerns from educators), others have reported continued access. Additionally, there are other browser extensions and add-ons that can provide similar AI assistance to students. These extensions or applications could include grammar checkers, math solvers, generative text, search tools, and code assistants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While there is no way to prevent these from being installed on personal devices, our Proctor U and Lockdown Browser products do prevent such tools from appearing or being used in proctored exams. Also, while some of these tools may support learning, unauthorized use on assignments, quizzes, or exams can raise concerns about academic integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communicating Expectations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It is recommended that you clearly communicate expectations about what materials or tools may or may not be used in your course, and include such language in your syllabus, assignment, and assessment instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
