How to apply to MSA Foundations: Prerequisites, deadlines and waiver tips

Boise State has built the MSA Foundations online program for individuals who are ready to start a career in accounting but do not have a background in the field. The program welcomes students with a bachelor’s degree in any discipline and combines the courses you need with graduate-level study — so you can move toward a respected master’s degree without taking extra classes at another school. Here’s everything you should know about MSA Foundations admissions before submitting your application.

Academic preparation

To qualify for admission, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. Most master’s in accountancy programs expect a certain number of upper-division business and accounting courses, which can be a challenge if your degree is in another field. MSA Foundations includes those courses in your study plan. You begin with the knowledge you need and continue right into graduate-level classes, saving time and money.

You’ll also need to demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, an essential tool in accounting and finance. You can meet this requirement in one of two ways:

  • Completing BusApp105: Spreadsheet Topics, or
  • Completing MyEducator, an affordable online course designed to assess and build Excel skills

This preparation ensures every student enters the program with the technical skills needed for success.

What you’ll need to apply

When you’re ready to submit your application, have these materials prepared:

  • Completed online application form
  • Current resume
  • Two references (academic or professional)
  • A personal statement describing your goals and interest in the program
  • Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended

Your personal statement is a key piece. Use it to reflect on your career goals, explain why you’re pursuing accounting and share the skills and experiences you’ll bring to graduate school.

Flexible testing requirements

Many prospective students wonder about standardized test scores. For MSA Foundations admissions, the GMAT or GRE is not automatically required. You may qualify for a waiver if you meet one of these criteria:

  • A GPA of 3.2 or higher in the last 60 credits of your bachelor’s degree
  • A GPA of 3.0 or higher with at least two years of relevant work experience
  • A previously earned advanced degree
  • A professional certification such as CPA, CMA or CIA

These options make graduate school more accessible, especially for working professionals balancing a job, family and school.

Application deadlines

Boise State accepts applications on a rolling basis, which means you can apply at any time. However, each term has specific deadlines that determine when classes start. Applying early gives you more time to explore financial aid and scholarship opportunities, prepare your materials and connect with a student success coach who can guide you through the process.

Tips for a strong application

  • Start early: Request transcripts well in advance to avoid delays.
  • Connect with a coach: A student success coach can answer questions about coursework, deadlines and expectations.
  • Ask about fee waivers: Application fee waiver codes may be available.
  • Take time with your personal statement: Thoughtful writing shows your readiness and motivation.

What happens next

Once admitted, you’ll join a program designed for career changers who want to build accounting knowledge and prepare for roles such as tax manager, auditor or financial analyst. The degree also positions you to pursue CPA licensure and, with experience, leadership paths in fields ranging from healthcare to government. You can see more outcomes on Boise State’s accountancy careers page.

With a clearly laid out application process and supportive resources, the MSA Foundations program helps you focus on your goals — not extra hurdles.
