Boise State University’s Online Degree Pathway is an ideal way to explore subjects and work toward earning a bachelor’s degree without committing to a specific program.
The program allows you to complete prerequisites and prepare for upper-division coursework as you gain experience and confidence as a Boise State online student.
The online format offers flexibility that provides you with the opportunity to work toward a degree around your busy schedule with low-cost options.
The Online Degree Pathway offers lower-division online courses and certificates to help you complete associate degree requirements, transition into a bachelor’s program and ease into higher education while making meaningful progress toward your goals.
How does the Online Degree Pathway work?
The Online Degree Pathway provides an accessible bridge to the next step in your education and career. So, how does the program work? You can choose from three types of courses. They are:
- Foundations courses: Prepare for upper-division and degree-specific coursework.
- Elective courses: Explore your interests and satisfy lower-division credit requirements toward a degree program.
- Pre-program pathways: Bridge the gap to start in a program with admission requirements, based on the number of credits completed, particular foundations courses or a completed associate degree.
The program offers specialized pathways to prepare you for four popular Boise State online bachelor’s degrees. These degrees require a specific number of college credits before you apply. If you don’t meet the application requirements, starting in the Online Degree Pathway helps you earn those credits. They are:
- Pre-Advanced Medical Imaging Pathway: Gain modality-specific training as a professional technologist.
- Pre-Business Administration Pathway: Become an effective, ethical leader and help advance your career.
- Pre-Accountancy Pathway: Lay the foundation for a meaningful career in accounting and business as you complete business foundations classes to qualify for upper-division accountancy work.
- Pre-Social Work Pathway: Pave the way for success with prerequisites that build a strong foundation for upper-division social work classes and field placement.

Following her time in the Online Degree Pathway, Hannah Gayle graduated from Boise State’s online Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies program in 2020.
“COVID-19 got me into teaching,” she said. “I was graduating and applying for jobs. I wasn’t having a lot of luck, but I was already working in education. I was able to use my bachelor’s degree as a way to get into a teaching program I am in now, City Teaching Alliance.
“I didn’t have the GPA requirement to get into Teach for America, but I wanted to leave my hometown and get a new opportunity. I got into this teaching program because I already had my bachelor’s degree.”
Gayle thrived in the online learning environment after quitting college the first time around as a traditional student.
“I was really not good with online classes before I was in this program,” she said. “It made online learning a lot easier and more attainable for me than the other online classes that I had taken. I wouldn’t have finished school if it wasn’t for this program. It worked out well.”
Connor Fulton graduated from Boise State’s online Bachelor of Science in Advanced Medical Imaging program after working in the Online Degree Pathway.
“Many of the technologists that I have met throughout my career have been trained on the job, and while their knowledge of procedures and anatomy is extensive, they often do not fully understand the physics and instrumentation behind magnetic resonance imaging,” he said.
“The advanced medical imaging program at Boise State has given me substantial knowledge of the fundamentals behind MRI, which has paid dividends when it comes to problem-solving technical issues and adjusting extrinsic parameters during imaging procedures.”
