Boise State University’s Master of Social Work (MSW) Online program includes two options based on your previous higher education experience.

The standard pathway applies if you hold a bachelor’s degree in a field other than social work. This option includes both foundational and advanced coursework, as well as in-person field work in your community.

The Advanced Standing MSW applies if you have already earned a Bachelor of Social Work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and you meet the qualifications. This option allows you to skip foundational coursework and complete your degree faster.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Advanced Standing MSW degree plan.

Understanding the advanced standing pathway

The Advanced Standing MSW pathway offers a streamlined path to a graduate degree by focusing on advanced-level coursework and allowing students to complete the program in less time.

Boise State’s MSW Online is accredited by the CSWE’s Board of Accreditation, confirming that the program meets or exceeds professional and academic standards required for high-quality social work education.

Accreditation applies to all delivery methods — including online — and ensures the program prepares you with the knowledge and skills necessary for responsible, ethical social work practice.

Boise State’s MSW program has been continuously accredited since 1992, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to excellence in social work education.

Accreditation is an important part of your path to becoming a licensed social worker. It shows that a program has the resources, curriculum and support systems in place to prepare you for advanced social work practice.

Who qualifies for advanced standing?

Admission to the Advanced Standing MSW pathway is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. All applicants must show relevant social work experience on their resume. You may be eligible for the Advanced Standing MSW if either of the following apply:

  • You earned your Bachelor of Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program within the last five years.
  • You earned your Bachelor of Social Work within the last 10 years and have significant post-graduation social work experience.

If you do not meet these criteria, consider applying to the Standard MSW pathway.

How long does it take?

As a full-time student, you can complete the online Master of Social Work in as few as 12 months. If you attend part-time, you can complete the program in as few as 22 months.

If you qualify for the advanced standing MSW, you can finish it in as little as three semesters full-time or under two years part-time.

Why choose Boise State’s online advanced standing MSW?

The accelerated MSW online offers flexibility because of its 100% online format, so you have the unique opportunity to engage with Boise State’s respected faculty while maintaining personal and professional responsibilities.

The rigorous curriculum is designed for students who need flexibility without compromising academic excellence. There is also no cost difference for out-of-state tuition, maintaining affordability.

You will complete your coursework and field placements within your own community, allowing you to build strong local connections and address specific regional needs.
