8 Tips for balancing work and online studies

Balancing work and online studies can be both rewarding and challenging. Many students pursue online education while managing full-time jobs, family responsibilities and other life commitments, which means time and energy are often stretched thin. Without the structure of a traditional classroom, it can sometimes feel difficult to stay focused.

The good news is that with the right strategies, it’s possible to successfully manage both your professional and academic responsibilities. From creating a realistic schedule to setting clear priorities and using available support resources, small adjustments can make a big difference. With a little bit of planning, you can balance your life with your online education and achieve success.

The following advice was collected from former Boise State Online students who have been in your shoes and can help you stay productive, reduce stress and make steady progress toward your educational goals while continuing to work.

1. Approach your studies with a professional mindset

Treat your coursework with the same level of commitment and professionalism you bring to your workplace. Set regular study hours, show up prepared and hold yourself accountable for deadlines.

2. Find your focus

Turn your phone and TV off when studying. Creating a distraction-free environment can dramatically improve your productivity. Eliminating interruptions allows you to focus fully on your assignments and complete them more efficiently.

3. Make homework and study time a priority

Many courses provide estimated reading or activity times to help you plan your schedule. Use these estimates to block out study time so you’re not surprised by how long something takes.

Prioritizing homework ensures you stay on track and complete assignments thoughtfully rather than rushing at the last minute. Starting early also gives you time to ask questions or fix issues.

4. Be on time

Many online courses allow you to engage with the materials on your own time but that doesn’t mean your coursework can be submitted at any time, unless agreed upon by your instructor. If your instructor says the homework is due at midnight, they mean midnight.

5. Get to know your syllabus

The syllabus is the roadmap for the entire course. Reviewing it carefully and highlighting key dates, expectations and policies can help you stay organized throughout the term. Consider printing it out and highlighting the important details.

6. Add reminders to your phone for deadlines and due dates

Using digital reminders can help you stay aware of upcoming assignments and discussions. A quick alert a day or two before something is due can keep deadlines from slipping through the cracks. Online courses often have multiple types of deadlines each week. Keeping track of when discussion posts, module activities and assignments are due will help you manage your workload effectively.

Visual reminders can be a powerful way to stay organized and accountable. Whether it’s sticky notes, a wall calendar or a planner, choose a system that fits your routine and check it regularly.

Find what works for you and stick with it!

7. If you don’t understand something, ask your instructor

Nobody expects you to be an expert on day one — that’s why you’re here! Don’t hesitate to reach out when you’re confused about a concept or assignment. Instructors are there to help, and they want you to understand the materials and do your best work.

8. Acknowledge the expectations of the class

Take time to learn how the course is structured and what your instructor expects from you. Knowing participation requirements, grading criteria and communication guidelines will help you succeed. Similarly, online classes are just as rigorous as those in person — plan to spend as much time and effort as you would for an in-person class.

Online study doesn’t mean you’re alone

Whether you are five minutes or 500 miles away from the Boise State campus, there are many ways to stay connected and engaged with your degree program. Actively participating in your online classes helps you remain involved in discussions and coursework, while reaching out to classmates or professors can strengthen your academic network and make learning more collaborative.

If you need support or simply want to connect in other ways, your student success team is also there to help. They can provide guidance, answer your questions and help you make the most of your Boise State experience no matter where you are located.
