Celebrating 10 years of impact: Boise State’s MSW online program

For the past decade, Boise State’s Master of Social Work online program has helped students turn compassion into action. What began as a flexible option for working adults has evolved into a nationally recognized program that prepares social workers to serve communities across the country.

The impact is clear. Graduates now span 49 of 50 states, extending Boise State’s reach into nearly every corner of the nation. Behind that growth is a program built on access, support and a deep commitment to training future social workers.

This milestone also offers a chance to reflect on the people behind the program. Laura Brown, adjunct instructor; Michael Slagel, affiliate graduate faculty; and Matt Reynolds, adjunct instructor share their perspectives on its growth and impact, alongside insights from students who have experienced it firsthand.

Growth of Boise State’s MSW Online program

The need for skilled social workers continues to rise, with 6% job growth projected from 2024 to 2034. Boise State’s MSW Online program has evolved alongside that demand, expanding in both size and reputation.

As Slagel shared:

“It’s amazing the amount, not only of growth by numbers of students, but of the continued improvements that the program has taken. As you can imagine, things are not exactly the same as they were when the online program first began; however, I’m proud of the work that has been done to make the program what it is today. And I’m also proud to say that I contributed to that success that the team has had!”

This growth reflects more than enrollment. It shows trust from students seeking a program that meets them where they are and prepares them for meaningful work.

Student outcomes in the MSW Online program

At the heart of the program is a strong commitment to student outcomes. For the 2022–2023 academic year, 87% of students graduated within three years, a reflection of both student determination and the support systems in place.

That support shows up in practical ways, especially during field placement.

“I had the support of faculty in finding and securing field placement. That is one of the things I looked at when I was researching different universities — some places don’t help with that.”

Boise State’s personalized field coordination helps students gain hands-on experience in their own communities without putting their lives on hold.

Flexible program for working professionals

Many MSW Online students balance careers, families and community responsibilities. The program is designed with that reality in mind.

Brown said:

“I’ve learned that online students are juggling a lot in their lives between school, work, families, caretakings, practicum and more. If we want to produce strong social workers with lived experience and resilience, we have to meet them where they are.”

This approach shapes everything from course design to faculty support, creating an environment where students can succeed without stepping away from their responsibilities.

A learning experience that changes perspectives

The MSW Online curriculum challenges students to think differently about their role in social work. Courses push beyond theory and into real-world application, often reshaping career paths.

When asked what her favorite course to teach is, Brown said:

“505 [Foundation of Social Welfare Policy] is definitely my favorite, but I’ve been teaching it the longest. It’s comfortable, but also exciting for me. The majority of students come into the course a little fearful and with preconceived notions about how policy isn’t very relatable to their future careers. They leave with an entirely shifted perspective, and I always have a handful who say it’s been their favorite class and that they are now considering a career path in advocacy and public policy. There is no better compliment!”

That transformation is supported by faculty who invest deeply in student success.

Richard Renz, a graduate of the social work program, shared about his experience with a professor reaching out to help him.

“In my first economics class, I was completely lost. I told the professor I was going to drop the class, and he said, ‘Let’s figure this out.’ He connected me with his TA and even sat with us after class to make sure I understood.”

That kind of personalized support is typical of Boise State faculty.

“If you put in the work, they will do everything in their power to help you succeed. That’s why I love being a Bronco. They want you to succeed.”

Social justice focus in the MSW Online

For many students and faculty, social work is more than a career. It is a calling rooted in advocacy and equity.

When asked what inspired her to enter the field, Brown said:

“My deep-rooted passion for social justice and the desire to truly help people. Once your eyes are open to the injustice of our systems, you can’t unsee it.”

That mission resonates with students across the program, including those drawn to its strong clinical training. Graduate Ashley Thacker pointed out how this program is unique in its learning.

“I’ve heard from other social workers — in Washington, specifically — that Boise State has a phenomenal clinical program, not just macro and mezzo practice. The micro portions focusing on diagnostics for a whole course or focusing on specific modalities are very different from other social work programs in the United States.”

Evolving with the field of social work

Over the past decade, the field of social work has shifted alongside broader changes in society. Technology, remote services and increased demand have reshaped how care is delivered.

When asked how the field has changed, Brown said:

“Our whole world has changed and continues to change quickly with technology, remote learning, working and social service. There is a huge demand for social work professionals in our country, but also tricky times with our health care system not effectively serving people, which trickles down to people being able to access service.”

When asked about the biggest challenges in the field, she added:

“My social work sphere revolves around health care, so affordability and access to care are the biggest challenges the clientele I work with face.”

Boise State’s program continues to adapt, preparing students to meet these challenges and serve their communities effectively.

A community built on connection

Even in an online format, connection remains central to the student experience. When asked about his favorite moments in the program, Reynolds said:

“My favorite moments are when a student starts the course with a little trepidation but in the end realizes they can do this and are thankful for what they learned and appreciate the process of that learning.”

These moments help foster a sense of belonging and collaboration that extends beyond the virtual classroom.

Looking ahead: the next decade of impact

As the program looks to the future, its mission remains clear: to prepare socially conscious, highly skilled professionals who are ready to advocate for change.

When asked what advice he would give to aspiring social workers, Slagel said:

“Never give up. I’ve attended four colleges/universities to obtain my degrees, often with years of gaps between attending. Intelligence isn’t the most important thing, perseverance and grit is far more critical for your success.”

Reflecting on her time in the program, Brown added:

“It’s been such a joy to be involved in a small slice of academia and the learning journey of so many future social workers. I have been most impressed with Boise State’s MSW Online leadership, and I look forward to being a part of it for more years to come!”
