Leyla Menjivar earned certificates in elementary Spanish and applied emotional intelligence along with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Professional Studies while balancing school, work and raising her daughter.

Originally from Compton, California, Menjivar moved to Idaho in 2021 and used that transition as motivation to focus on her future and education.

“I’m proud to say that tomorrow I will be graduating and walking across the stage as a first-generation graduate, which is a huge accomplishment for me and my family,” she said.

For Menjivar, the online format made it possible to continue pursuing her goals without missing important moments with her family.

“What I loved most about my online degree program was the flexibility it gave me to continue my education while balancing motherhood, work and everyday responsibilities,” she shared.

After graduation, Menjivar plans to continue working as a substance use disorder counselor while pursuing a master’s degree.

Daniel Omar completed Boise State’s online Interdisciplinary Professional Studies program along with certificates in design thinking, applied emotional intelligence and applied leadership while working full time in Boise.

As a refugee rebuilding his life in the United States, returning to school represented an important milestone and personal achievement.

“The coursework encouraged deep reflection, creative problem-solving and leadership from an authentic place,” Omar said when reflecting on his experience.

He said the program helped reshape the way he approaches leadership, personal growth and professional challenges.

“This education helped me gain confidence, clarity and a stronger sense of identity as a professional and a lifelong learner,” he shared.

Melissa Golebiowski: Finding purpose through social work

Melissa Golebiowski earned her Master of Social Work online while working with transitional-aged youth experiencing complex trauma and system involvement.

Living in Los Angeles while studying alongside classmates across the country broadened her understanding of how social work systems vary between communities and states.

“I found this extremely valuable to gain a more holistic understanding of how social work services impact the entire country vs. just our local area,” she said.

Her experience in the program reinforced her long-term goal of becoming a traveling social worker after obtaining her clinical license.

“I am in a completely different industry and I feel so much more aligned with the work I am doing,” she shared.

Britney Hassan: Serving others through leadership and social work

Britney Hassan completed her Master of Social Work while serving as an active-duty Navy senior chief and raising her two daughters.

Her experiences in both the military and social work field placements strengthened her passion for helping others and creating change within complex systems.

“My academic and clinical training has strengthened my ability to understand complex systems, support individuals and communities and lead with empathy and strategic insight,” Hassan said.

She especially appreciated the opportunity to connect with classmates from different backgrounds and learn from their perspectives and experiences.

After nearly two decades working as a radiologic technologist and CT technologist, Darcy Lukin completed her Bachelor of Science in Advanced Medical Imaging from her home on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana.

The flexibility of Boise State’s online imaging program allowed Lukin to continue working while pursuing a longtime personal goal.

“This program has also helped me to pass my boards for being a registered CT technologist,” she said.

Lukin said earning her degree gave her the confidence to overcome test anxiety and pursue new opportunities in the future.

“I will always carry with me that no matter how old you are, it is never too late to fulfill your dreams,” she shared.
