Scope and Audience
This policy applies to all University faculty and staff.
1. Policy Purpose
To outline the procedures for an employee to retire from the University.
2. Policy Statement
Boise State University values faculty and staff contributions to fulfill the University’s mission and reflects this in many ways, including its retirement benefits.
3. Responsibilities and Procedures
3.1 Notification of Retirement
All notifications of resignation should be placed in writing to the immediate supervisor indicating last day of work. Notification of retirement should be submitted to the University Benefits Manager at least two (2) months prior to retirement date to process necessary paperwork through the state system.
a. For classified employees, please forward a copy of your retirement notification to Human Resources.
b. For professional staff and faculty, please forward a copy of notification of retirement to Human Resources, the dean, or appropriate vice president. An Employment Action Form must be originated by the employing department to separate the employee from payroll.
3.2 Exit Forms
Exit forms will be sent to the employee and must be completed and returned to Human Resources. The employee should contact Human Resources to make an appointment for processing separation paperwork which includes retirement, health insurance, and other benefits.
3.3 Emeritus Status
If the retiring of faculty or staff member meets the criteria for emeritus status, the nomination should occur as outlined in University Policy 4280 (Emeritus Faculty) and University Policy 7480 (Emeritus Classified and Professional Staff).
