Dr. George Blumenthal
Director of the Center for the Study of Higher Education at UC Berkeley
George Blumenthal is Director of UC Berkeley’s Center for Studies in Higher Education. For the previous 13 years, Blumenthal was Chancellor of UC Santa Cruz, where he oversaw significantly increased enrollment of first generation and minority students, the addition of graduate programs, and significant improvement in UCSC’s research profile, culminating in membership in the prestigious American Association of Universities.
As an astrophysicist, Blumenthal has contributed to our understanding dark matter and the origin of structure in the universe and is one of the originators of the cold dark matter theory. He has co-authored two textbooks, 21st Century Astronomy and Understanding Our Universe, now in their sixth and fourth editions respectively
Blumenthal has chaired his department and the UC Academic Senate and was the faculty representative to the UC Regents.
Blumenthal serves on several governing boards, including the California Association for Research in Astronomy (which oversees the Keck Observatory), the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (also known as the Stem Cell board), and the American University of Armenia.
