    Dr. Joan T.A. Gabel

    President, University of Minnesota

    Joan T.A. Gabel assumed office as the University of Minnesota’s 17th President on July 1, 2019. Under her leadership, the U of M has advanced the strength and impact of the University system, including the development of the first systemwide strategic plan. She is leading the University’s efforts to address the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, while reimagining opportunities for the University to advance its nearly 170-year legacy, and working towards a bright future of teaching, research, and service. In the aftermath of the George Floyd tragedy, she took important steps to improve the efforts towards a more equitable and just University, and ensured continuity of these efforts through shared governance and community engagement.

    President Gabel most recently served as executive vice president and the provost at the University of South Carolina (UofSC), and previously held faculty appointments at Georgia State University and Florida State University. She also served as dean of the University of Missouri’s Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business, where she was recognized as a shining star in business school administration by the Wall Street Journal.

    She earned her bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Haverford College and her Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia. She has been recognized with numerous research, service, and teaching awards.
