Joie Burns Portrait

Joie Burns came to Boise State in 1994 with more than eight years of experience in medical imaging, credentialed in radiography, as well as abdominal, obstetric & gynecologic and vascular sonography. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology from Boise State University, Boise, Idaho in 1992, and with a Master of Science in Instructional & Performance Technology from Boise State University in 1997. She completed graduate courses toward a PhD in Adult Education through University of Idaho.

Practicing in the acute and non-acute settings in Idaho, Burns focused initially in emergency and critical care radiography, and transitioned to the use of ultrasound in the diagnosis and treatment of abdominal, obstetric, gynecologic and vascular pathology. She continues to work clinically in a variety of non-acute settings to maintain her sonographic proficiency and remain current in the industry. Burns’s radiography teaching is focused on physical assessment and clinical portions of the curriculum. In the Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Program Burns teaches all sonography related classes, encompassing ultrasound physics and instrumentation, scanning laboratories, clinical experience, and didactic course work covering normal and pathologic abdominal, superficial parts, OB/GYN, and vascular topics. Delivery approaches for the DMS courses range from traditional face-to-face and hybrid to completely online. Burns is highly committed to teaching and remaining current in the dynamic medical imaging industry. She consistently encourages students to think critically as they merge didactic theory with clinical application.

During the past 18 years at Boise State, Burns has served the university, college and department through a variety of committee membership, and as a program director, clinical coordinator and department chairperson. Currently she is the program director of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program.

Burns is married and has two grown children. She is an avid football and soccer fan, and enjoys outdoor activities with family and friends.
