In 2007, Than received his M.S. in Raptor Biology from Boise State University, studying Barn Owl roadway mortality and plumage ornamentation.  During his years at Boise State, he also led the Barn Owl Box Project and worked as a Biological Field Technician.

Than has worked several summers in various positions for different government and private agencies.  He has worked as a Songbird Bander, Field Biologist, Dragonfly Monitor, Breeding Bird Monitor, and Field Herpetologist.

Than has been a Tennessee Amphibian Monitoring Program Surveyor for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency since February 2009.

Than has been a Wildlife Biologist for the Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge in Tennessee since December 2010.

In December 2011, Than received his Ph.D. in Natural Resources (Wildlife Ecology) from the University of Tennessee. As a graduate research assistant there, he led a multi-state, multi-organization project investigating the impact of various types of forest management on declining eastern songbirds, especially the Cerulean Warbler.

Currently, Than holds a post-doc position with the University of Illinois. He is analyzing a long-term dataset involving nest survival of Black-capped Vireos, as well as conducting fieldwork to better understand behavioral responses by BCVI to cowbirds and cowbird parasitism.

Than has written several peer-reviewed publications and technical reports.  His work has appeared in a variety of popular press publications and he has given numerous scientific presentations.
