In 1996, Al received his M.S. in Raptor Biology at Boise State University, studying Ferruginous Hawks in south central Washington.

Between 1996 and 2001, as a civilian, Al was an Endangered Species Specialist, first for the Fort Bliss Military base in El Paso, Texas, and then for the Missouri National Guard.

From 2002 to 2011, he was a Endangered Species Biologist for the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Currently, Al is working for the Missouri Department of Conservation as a Policy Coordinator.

Al, his wife, Kate, and their two children live in Jefferson City, Missouri. When he is not taking his children to sports activities, he enjoys hunting, fishing, and camping.
