After graduating from Boise State University, he changed course and went to the University of Kansas School of Medicine and graduated in 1998. He then completed an orthopedic surgery residency in 2003, also at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Following residency, he moved back home to South Dakota and settled in the state capital of Pierre, near the Missouri River. Gonzalo practices with Avera Medical Group in Pierre.
Gonzalo, his wife, Tiffany, and their four children are very active in sports, hunting, and the outdoors. He continues to maintain an active banding permit so he can keep tabs on the local Gyrfalcons, continues his love of falconry, and hunts Prairie Grouse almost daily through the season.
