This page outlines federal research security training requirements, who must complete the training, and how to access the required CITI Program course.
Who must complete the training?
Required individuals generally include personnel who significantly contribute to the development or design of a federally funded project, such as Principal Investigators (PIs) and senior and key personnel. These individuals must complete training within 12 months prior to proposal submission.
Federal agency requirements
Department of Energy (DOE) – currently in effect
National Science Foundation (NSF) – currently in effect
National Institutes of Health (NIH) – effective May 25, 2026
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) – effective August 5, 2026
Other federal agencies – implementation dates have not yet been announced
How to complete the training
- Access CITI through Boise State’s Single Sign On (SSO) system by selecting “Log in Through My Organization.”
Using SSO helps link your training completion to your Boise State account and InfoEd records.
- If you do not have an account, create one.
- Add Research Security Training (Combined) to your course list.
- Complete the training
The training takes approximately one hour to complete and covers topics such as disclosure requirements, cybersecurity, international collaboration, and research security best practices.
