The Boise State Hazard and Climate Resiliency Consortium (HCRI) and the Department of Art, Design, and Visual Studies are seeking artworks to exhibit during the HCRI Resilience Conference on May 1st, 2020 at the Stueckle Sky Center at Boise State University.

Goals of the 2020 Resilience Conference

  1. To provide a venue for researchers and community members to share their ongoing efforts, network with each other, and identify new collaborative opportunities to increase our region’s resilience to stresses and shocks. Example topics include population growth, climate change, water management, transportation, and public health, and others.
  2. To share how resilience is communicated through a variety of lenses; including presentations, discussions, creative works (e.g., art, dance, poetry), journalism, and others.

About resilience, for artists:

What is resilience?

Though resilience can be defined in many ways, one definition is—

“the capacity of individuals, communities, institutions, businesses, and systems within a [population center] to survive, adapt, and grow no matter what kinds of chronic stresses and acute shocks they experience.”

Resilience has many dimensions. What makes us as individuals resilient? Our social ties? Our place in society? What defines resilience in the face of life’s challenges? What does resilience look like in with urban growth and the rising cost of living? Are our communities resilient to the impacts of future hazard events or a changing climate? What are the impediments to resilience? One thing is certain – Resilience is dynamic, ever changing, and situationally dependent.

An artist’s interpretation of resilience

The organizers are seeking artworks that express resilience from the perspective of artists. There is no restriction on media or angle. We hope the artists feel the freedom to express whatever dimension of resilience they resonate with. For example, your piece could help your audience understand the impact of climate change on society (an educational piece), or could provide your perception or perspective of the idea of resilience.

ELIGIBILITY

Open to all community, faculty, and student artists in the Boise area who can hand deliver and pick up artworks to/from Boise State University on May 1st, 2020.  Each artist may submit up to three works. Artworks must fit through the building doors/elevator at the Stueckle Sky Center and be able to be handled by a maximum of two persons. Selected pieces will be displayed on easels, on tables, or freestanding so accepted media include painting, drawing, illustration, digital prints, photography, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media works. Two-dimensional artworks must be framed or mounted for presentation on an easel. One image per entry – no details or multiple views.
