Research Areas

  • Energy Efficiency
  • Renewable Energy
  • Smart Grid
  • Automation and Control
  • Systems Modeling

My main area of expertise is dynamic modeling and computer simulation of lumped parameter systems. My current research is focused on decentralized control of thermostatically controlled loads (e.g. residential air conditioning) in the context of smart grid and Internet of Things. The impact of this research is to re-imagine the electric grid and enable consumers to be more pro-active and re-active in stabilizing a grid that is approaching 100% renewable generation.

Collaboration

While there’s plenty of room for technical innovations to enable a smarter and more renewable grid, it is increasingly important to develop research projects that include the human element. Consumer motivation, behavioral choices, economics and market design are all critical factors in ensuring the future energy infrastructure is more resilient and more sustainable.
