Limited Submission Notice: NIH Institutional Biomedical Undergraduate Research Training (BURT) Program

Summary

The goal of the Institutional Biomedical Undergraduate Research Training (BURT) program is to strengthen research training environments and develop a pool of well-trained students who:

  • Complete their baccalaureate degrees in biomedically-related fields, and
  • Transition into and complete biomedical, research-focused higher degree programs (such as Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.).

BURT awards are intended to provide research training opportunities to students from the breadth of biomedical disciplines and prepare trainees to pursue advanced research training to address important biomedical problems in a range of fields from basic science to addressing the burden of chronic disease. Narrowly focused programs will be a low priority for funding (such as those focused on a single biomedical discipline). Programs should provide trainees with foundational skills for rigorous biomedical research, mentored research experiences, scientific collaboration and communication, and career development.

The BURT program will accept applications from eligible organizations in one of two tracks:

  • Single Site: To support trainees from a single baccalaureate-degree granting organization.
  • Community College Partnerships: To support community college trainee development through strong collaborations between at least one associate-degree granting organization (that is, a community college) and at least one baccalaureate-degree granting organization.

Award

The BURT program will support up to 30 trainees and provide a rate of $12,500/trainee/year plus travel and summer research experience funding for each trainee. Application budgets are not limited, but need to reflect the actual needs of the proposed project. Awards may be for project periods up to five years in duration and are renewable.

Limited Submission Requirements and Timeline

NIGMS will accept only one application, and support only one award, per applicant organization.

White Paper Process 
Only proposals approved by the Division of Research and Economic Development may be submitted to this program. For such approval, PIs must first submit a white paper form by 4 pm on 15 April 2026

In support of a competitive proposal, the Division encourages interested PIs to submit to the September 25, 2026 due date.

Important Notes on Sponsor Requirements
To reinforce strong partnerships, NIGMS requires the participation of at least one Program Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI) from each partner organization.
