Limited Submission Notice: NIH S10 Seed Instrumentation Support (SIS) FY27

Summary

Through the Seed Instrumentation Support (SIS) Program, NIH supports the purchase of a single, multi-user commercialized research instrument that is currently unavailable to the applicant institution. Applications must include a minimum of two NIH active grantees with distinct awards. Active grantees from other sponsors may participate and participants from other institutions are encouraged. As a low-resource institution, the focus is on building foundational research capacity, expanding the biomedical research workforce, and supporting sustainable, long-term research programs. 

Award

Applications will be accepted that request a single, commercially available instrument. The minimum award is $50,000. There is no upper limit on the cost of the instrument, but the maximum award is $400,000.

White Paper Process

Only proposals approved by the Division of Research and Economic Development may be submitted to this program. For such approval, PIs must first submit a white paper form by 4 pm on July 23, 2026.

Key Submission Dates:

  • July 23, 2026 by 4 pm – White Paper due
  • August 7, 2026 – Anticipated date applicants will be notified of approval 
  • August 12, 2026 – Proposal Intake Form (PIF) due to OSP Pre-Award
  • September 18, 2026 – Final documents due date to OSP
  • September 25, 2026 – Full proposal due to NIH

Important Note on Sponsor Requirements

  • A minimum of two NIH-funded users must be identified; at least one of the NIH-funded users must be from the applicant institution. NIH-funded users from other institutions are highly encouraged.
  • Each of the NIH-funded users must be a PD/PI on a distinct active NIH award (i.e., a grant or a cooperative agreement). An award given to multi-PDs/PIs on the same award is counted only once towards the fulfillment of the two-project requirement. Users with active funding from sources such as other federal agencies, private foundations, or academic institutions are eligible to use the instrument. 
  • To justify the requested instrument, the projects supported by NIH research awards should together have a preponderant use of the instrument and be placed in a safe and accessible shared resource to maximize collaboration.
