In August 2024, faculty members Matt Castner and Derek Ganong led a complete redesign of MC C115/117, transforming the space into a flexible keyboard and recording lab outfitted with new computers, MIDI controllers, desks and digital audio interfaces repurposed from GIMM.
The refit of the computer/keyboard lab in MC C117 was completed in May 2025. Supported by GIMM’s contributions, the renovated piano and production lab intentionally blends acoustic, performance-based pedagogy with contemporary production technologies to provide hands-on instruction in individual practice, ensemble work, multitrack recording and music-technology workflows. These facility enhancements align directly with the department’s newly redesigned Bachelor of Arts in Music.
The creation of a dedicated faculty position and the appointment of Logan Frewen as assistant teaching professor of music technology/commercial music further supported this initiative, strengthening instruction and experiential learning in studio, live audio and industry-facing projects while helping to launch and sustain the reimagined BA program.
Frewen brings graduate training in media scoring and production as well as extensive professional practice in live and recorded contexts, and his role will enable closer integration of client-based projects and production pedagogy into the curriculum. The department’s Music Production Certificate, a focused, 7-credit pathway that teaches Digital Audio Workstation workflows, recording, editing, mixing and project-based production skills, also draws on the lab’s upgraded resources to give students practical, career-applicable experience.
