All those hours of practice and strength training are invisible when Hayd competes, but they decide everything on the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same is true for Hayd\u2019s art. Viewers who see one of her paintings on display at Boise State\u2019s Center for the Visual Arts will see only the finished product, and not the hours of deliberation and refinement that went into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hayd first made waves in late 2024 when she went viral on social media as Boise State\u2019s \u201cgoth volleyball player.\u201d She sat for interviews with The New York Times and The Today Show. Over a year later, that fame still shapes her experience at Boise State, where people recognize her on campus and around town. \u201cIt\u2019s always a great interaction,\u201d Hayd said. \u201cReally sweet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But fame is only a small part of Hayd\u2019s campus life. Off the court, she is a visual arts major in the School of the Arts. Her emphasis is on drawing and painting with a self-described \u201chorror\u201d vibe, but the expansive program and cutting-edge facilities in the Center for the Visual Arts have given her creative opportunities that cross disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s gorgeous,\u201d Hayd said of the visual arts building, the sleek metal-and-glass structure on Capitol Blvd. It was an immediate draw when she was considering where to enroll. \u201cI actually went on three separate visits here just to tour the art building more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/schoolofthearts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/111\/2026\/04\/D_2602_011_066-scaled-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Sketchbook of drawings by Nora Hayd\" class=\"wp-image-11067\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Eleanor \u201cNora\u201d Hayd, COAS-Visual Arts (drawing and painting emphasis), Women\u2019s Beach Volleyball, BVB, Athletics to Academics, in CVA Art Metals Studio and Drawing\/Painting Studio, Photo by Priscilla Grover.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Center for the Visual Arts offers students a ripe workspace to explore inspiration. For Hayd, that includes her favorite, oil painting, and a variety of other mediums that she balances with her rigorous athletics schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe space is incredible,\u201d she said. \u201cI have an incredible view and the studio hours allow me to come in and work any time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Art and sport come together in Hayd\u2019s signature makeup style, which she shows off to varying degrees at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/broncosports.com\/sports\/womens-beach-volleyball\">beach volleyball<\/a>&nbsp;matches. She sees a little of herself in other athletes with similar aesthetics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI just did an interview with [Australian basketball player] Caitlin Cunningham,\u201d Hayd said. \u201cShe talked about her \u2018war paint\u2019 because she\u2019s also an alternative athlete.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hayd plans to graduate next year in spring 2027. That\u2019s still a long way off for a Boise State athlete who takes things day-by-day, but the visual arts program is doing plenty to prepare her for a creative career after graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can see myself doing something with marketing, where I\u2019m designing something with digital art,\u201d she said. \u201cI just love the process and exploring. I can see myself doing that the rest of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beach volleyball season is already in full swing. Hayd is heading to Los Angeles the weekend of Feb. 27 for the Battle of LA, and her athletics will take her all over the country this spring. That experience will compliment her creative work here at Boise State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlaying volleyball and being creative, for beach [volleyball] specifically, they\u2019re extremely related,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s so much freedom in how you play to your strengths and your weaknesses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex
