Some service-learning may involve mental and physical challenges. To help you prepare, review the safety tips below to support your safety and well-being.
Communicate
- Review safety expectations and procedures provided by your community partner and instructor.
- Ask your site supervisor for guidance on staying safe in your specific setting.
- Let someone know your location and expected return time when serving on site.
- If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, contact your site supervisor or instructor promptly. You may request an alternate service site if needed.
Plan Ahead
- Clarify your responsibilities and stay within the scope of your course and student/agency agreement.
- Dress appropriately for your setting, consistent with agency guidelines.
- Think through the logistics (location, schedule, technology access, transportation, parking).
- For rare situations involving home visits, follow all community partner safety briefings and procedures.
Transportation
- Drive carefully; the university is not liable for risks involved in students getting to and from their service sites.
- Do not give a client a ride in a personal vehicle. Note: driving cannot be a requirement of your service.
Boundaries
Maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times:
- Do not give or loan clients money or personal belongings.
- Do not share personal contact information or social media accounts unless explicitly required and approved by your instructor and partner.
- Do not tolerate inappropriate behavior. If you feel harassed, inform your supervisor or instructor immediately.
- Do not engage in business transactions or personal relationships with clients during the term of your service.
Injuries
- Protect yourself: carry your own health insurance** (BSU student health insurance is a good option).
**Boise State liability insurance does not cover student injuries (but it will cover third party injuries or damage). Agency liability insurance will cover student injuries as long as the student’s activities are within the scope of course guidelines and the student/agency agreement.
If Something Does Happen or You are Unsure
- If an incident occurs or if you are injured, contact your agency supervisor and your instructor to discuss what actions the agency and school should take to insure your physical and emotional well-being.
- Stay calm. Your instructor, the agency, and the SL staff will help you (call (208) 426-2380 or (208) 426-1004 for SL staff).
