Interventional Cardiology Emphasis

Boise State University’s Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences with an emphasis in Interventional Cardiology (IC) offers students an exciting pathway into one of the most advanced and rewarding specialties in healthcare. This emphasis prepares graduates to become essential members of the cardiac catheterization team, where high-tech imaging is integrated with minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease. Students gain a strong foundation in anatomy, physiology, imaging, and clinical practice, along with the technical and professional skills needed to thrive in today’s cardiac care environment.

Admission to the program is selective. Applicants complete required prerequisite coursework and participate in an application and interview process. The program is designed to serve both students entering the field of medical imaging for the first time and those who are already credentialed radiographers seeking advanced expertise. Through a rigorous combination of foundational studies, advanced imaging coursework, and immersive clinical training in cardiac catheterization labs, graduates earn a Bachelor of Science degree and are fully prepared to contribute as leaders in interventional cardiology.

Program Description:

The Interventional Cardiology (IC) emphasis can be pursued as either a degree completion program for credentialed radiographers or as a first or second bachelor’s degree pathway for students new to medical imaging who are eager to enter this high-demand field. The IC course sequence spans three semesters, blending intensive interactive learning with integrated clinical education. In addition to the specialized IC courses, students complete required advanced imaging coursework and Boise State’s Foundations general education program, ensuring a well-rounded academic experience.

The goals of the IC emphasis are twofold:

  • To provide in-depth education and clinical experience necessary to prepare students for the ARRT Cardiac-Interventional (CI) registry examination and/or the CCI Registered Cardiac Invasive Specialist (RCIS) exam, equipping them to practice as highly competent specialists in interventional cardiology.
  • To graduate technologists who excel not only in technical proficiency, but who also communicate effectively, integrate patient history into care, critically evaluate research, and exercise sound judgment in complex clinical situations.

Graduates leave the program with the expertise, confidence, and credential readiness to build meaningful careers in interventional cardiology.
