Susan Esp has worked at Boise State University since 2000. Esp earned her Ph.D. in Adult and Organizational Learning and Leadership from the University of Idaho in 2007, her M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ, 1991, and her B.S. in Psychology from the University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY in 1986. She is also a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and a Certified GAIN Trainer and GAIN Interviewer.

Prior to entering academia, Esp was employed as an individual and family therapist at a residential treatment facility for adolescents from 1991-1993 and a school counselor and substance abuse prevention and intervention specialist through the Boise School district from 1993 to 2000. In addition she worked as senior staff counselor and substance abuse intervention prevention specialist at the Boise State University Counseling Center from 2000-2002.

Esp’s administrative roles at Boise State include Coordinator of the Prevention and Addiction Studies emphasis to the Health Science Studies degree program and Coordinator of the Graduate Certificate in Addiction Studies.

Esp’s research and teaching specialties lie in the discipline of addiction studies, prevention, and intervention. Publications and presentations related to her specialties involve chemical dependence and addiction in youth, implementing substance abuse prevention programs, behavioral health as a public health issue and the integration of mental health and substance abuse services.

As validation of her expertise in counseling and substance abuse prevention and intervention, Esp has received internal grants from Boise State University, as well as external contracts from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.
