This summer, Master of Public Health student Brenna Woolery interned for the Idaho State Insurance Fund. Read on to learn about the challenging and rewarding aspects of her internship focusing on the importance of worker safety.

Q: What were some of your projects or responsibilities?

A: During my internship, I’ve had the opportunity to take on a variety of projects that were both challenging and rewarding. A significant part of my responsibilities included shadowing and conducting safety surveys at numerous businesses within the Treasure Valley to identify potential hazards and recommend avenues for improvement.

I also focused on creating educational materials, including  presentations and informational flyers designed to help businesses enhance their worker safety programs. Additionally, I was given the opportunity to lead a safety training session with a focus on healthcare ergonomics and proper lifting techniques.

Q: What was the best part of your internship experience?

A: During my internship, the most rewarding aspect was the opportunity to meet and connect with local business owners. It was fascinating to see the diverse range of industries that help make Idaho thrive, while also being able to pursue my passion for educating people on the importance of worker safety.

Q: What are you most proud of from your time with this internship?

A: I’m most proud of stepping out of my comfort zone to present safety information to a room full of strangers. It was an intimidating experience to stand before seasoned professionals and instruct them on how to do their jobs safely. Thankfully, the employees were incredibly receptive and engaged; further solidifying my passion and confirming that this is exactly the kind of work I want to pursue in my career.

Q: What advice do you have for students who are applying for internships?

A: Look within your company if you are already employed. Do a little research on the different departments if needed and talk to your manager about potential internship opportunities in other departments.

And, for any and all students, step out of your comfort zone. An internship is the perfect time to challenge yourself. These experiences are invaluable for learning about yourself and gaining practical experience in your desired field. The biggest growth often happens when you push past what’s comfortable.
