{"id":28748,"date":"2024-12-18T11:03:16","date_gmt":"2024-12-18T18:03:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/spph\/?p=28748"},"modified":"2025-07-03T13:47:03","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T19:47:03","slug":"spph-students-take-a-three-dimensional-approach-to-disaster-preparedness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/spph\/spph-students-take-a-three-dimensional-approach-to-disaster-preparedness\/","title":{"rendered":"SPPH Students Take a Three-Dimensional Approach to Disaster Preparedness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/spph\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/12\/Group-Photo-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Uwe Reischl and students in his Disaster Preparedness course\" class=\"wp-image-28749\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Professor Uwe Reischl and students in his Disaster Preparedness course<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This semester, nine Boise State students took the Disaster Preparedness course taught by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/spph\/\"><strong>S<\/strong><strong>chool of Public and Population Health<\/strong><\/a> Professor Uwe Reischl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students spent the semester learning about the function of public health in disaster preparedness planning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the course, students planned for their final project \u2014&nbsp;a three-dimensional small-scale cardboard model that if built in reality could serve as a shelter during a natural disaster. The students designed the structures to withstand certain disasters in mind, such as: hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, wildfires and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn more about each of their experiences in the class:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.gyazo.com\/a15e886703b36be8fd189f03d951e522.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of Aidan O'Connor with his building model\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Aidan O&#8217;Connor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing prepared for everything is important and making sure you have the supplies you need doesn\u2019t come cheap. But you can always be prepared at a small scale, too.\u201d &#8211; <strong>Aidan O&#8217;Connor, Senior<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/spph\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/12\/Alex-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of Alex Honn with his building model\" class=\"wp-image-28751\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Alex Honn<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of the biggest takeaways from this class for me is that failing to prepare is preparing to fail. And being part of your community makes it easier to rely on each other and help others be prepared. I realized that those would be very handy if we were to be in a disaster situation.
