Sanctioning

As part of the conduct process at Boise State, you may be required to complete sanctions as a part of the conclusion of the hearing process.

Sanctions are imposed for the purposes of restoring the standards of the University Community, educating students about the seriousness of their actions, promoting positive growth, and maintaining the safety of the students involved and of the University Community.

Sanctions are determined by the Conduct Body (defined in Section 7/B of the Student Code of Conduct) and are considered final unless overturned through the proper Conduct Appeal Process.

The following section, outlines the standard educational sanctions for alcohol and drug violations.*

First alcohol violation: AlcoholEdu is an online alcohol education course. A $100 fee is associated with the sanction and will be posted to your myBoiseState account.

First drug violation: eCHECK UP TO GO is an online marijuana education course. A $125 fee is associated with this sanction and will be posted to your myBoiseState account.

Second alcohol and/or drug violation: Community Service with a reflection paper OR Alcohol & Other Drug Assessment (AODA). Depending on the severity of the incident, you may be required to complete two sessions of AODA Level 2, associated with a $50 per session fee OR two sessions of AODA Level 3, associated with a $100 per session fee. AODA must be scheduled in person with University Health Services. More information can be found on the AODA Assessment Referral Form.

Third alcohol and/or drug violation: Any sanction outlined previously, as appropriate, and a reflection paper outlining why you would like to continue to be part of the Boise State campus community and action steps you are going to take to avoid future violations of the Student Code of Conduct.

Fourth alcohol and/or drug violation: A Conduct Hearing Board will convene to review your conduct record at Boise State to determine additional sanctioning for ongoing violations of the Student Code of Conduct.

*Please note, information previously listed is not inclusive of all potential sanctions you may be assigned. For more information about sanctioning, refer to Section 7/B. of the Student Code of Conduct.

The following information is sent to all students upon enrollment to ensure that students are aware that drug-related convictions may result in the loss of financial aid. If you are convicted of any offense under any federal or state law involving the possession or sale of a controlled substance while receiving federal financial aid you will be ineligible to receive financial aid for the following period of time:

Possession of a Controlled Substance

First offense: one (1) year from the date of conviction.

Second offense: two (2) years from the date of conviction.

Third offense: indefinitely from the date of conviction.

Sale of a Controlled Substance

First offense: two (2) years from the date of conviction.

Second offense: indefinitely from the date of conviction.

It is possible to regain eligibility for federal financial aid before the end of your Financial Aid suspension period if:

  • You satisfactorily complete an approved drug rehabilitation program that includes two unannounced drug tests.
  • Your conviction is reversed, set aside, or otherwise rendered void.
