We are excited that you are interested in becoming a member of the Boise State University Keith Stein Blue Thunder Marching Band Color Guard!  First and foremost, the audition process is designed to help our staff understand your current skill level before you join the band, so please don’t feel intimidated—we want you to succeed.
Live Color Guard Audition
Live audition will take place on April 12, 2026, please plan on a full day. During this comprehensive audition, which replicates what BTMB CG rehearsals are like, you will be evaluated in the areas of flag fundamentals, movement & marching, level of retention, performance ability and teachability.
Additionally, as part of the LIVE Audition, BTMB will supply any necessary equipment.
Throughout the day, the itinerary will include but is not limited to:
- Introduction; who we are, what we do, expectations
- warm up & stretch moving into body movement & form
- flag technique, spins, flag exercises, flag releases
- learning audition routine
- audition evaluation
- To ensure a successful audition experience, please wear:
- dance type shoes
- clothes you can move in (no denim)
- your hair back out of your face
- In addition to proper attire, please bring:
- a refillable water bottle
- lunch
- snacks
- To participate in the live audition, please complete the following steps in order:
- Apply to Boise State University for admission, make note of your Boise State University ID#
- Apply for scholarships using the Boise State Scholarship Application
- Use the link below to request to attend LIVE Color Guard Audition; once we receive your request we will email you with a confirmation that includes details regarding call time, parking instructions, and location
Distance Color Guard Audition
Alternatively, potential new members that reside outside a 100 mile radius from campus may submit their audition video via internet upload.
For your submission, each Color Guard audition must be uploaded as a single video link and include the following:
First, demonstrate your foundational movement skills
Fundamentals
Record with audible metronome, 135 bpm
- Across the floor jazz run
- chasse/saute’ combo
- Fundamentals Example Video
Next, you’ll need to demonstrate your repertoire skills

Record the warmup routine, set to 7 Years
Finally, you’ll need to include the Visual Component
