We are thrilled that you are interested in becoming a member of the Boise State University Keith Stein Blue Thunder Marching Band as the Feature Twirler. This prestigious and highly visible role within the program is awarded to an exceptional performer who demonstrates elite technical proficiency, commanding performance presence, and the ability to represent the Blue Thunder as a featured, soloistic performer. The Feature Twirler is a full member of the marching band who is responsible for creatively choreographing their own routines for performances with the band throughout the season and is held to a high technical and performance standard.

DISTANCE Feature Twirler Audition
Potential new members that reside outside a 100 mile radius from campus may submit their audition video via internet upload.
Audition should demonstrate the following:
- Baton Technique – advanced baton skills, including but not limited to:
- One-Baton
- Double variations, such as double illusion, illusion walkover, double walkover, 4-spin
- Advanced rolls, including complex body rolls
- Advanced contact material demonstrating control, continuity, and creativity
- Two-Baton
- Advanced two-baton work
- Controlled releases with consistent timing
- Clear musical phrasing and technical control
- Three-Baton
- Advanced technique beyond basic juggling
- Variety of releases, patterns, and transitions
- Control, timing, and confidence throughout
- One-Baton
- Movement & Dance – strong foundation in movement and dance technique through use of control, alignment, strength, flexibility, musicality, and overall quality of movement.
- Proficiency in
- Chaîné turns
- Jazz runs
- Split leaps
- Chassé
- Proficiency in
- Choreography – advanced choreographic skills through
- Alignment of movement and choreography with the style and character of the musical selection
- Emphasis on advanced baton technique and clean transitions
- Strong stage presence, projection, and confidence
- An understanding of performing as a featured visual element
- Creativity and effective use of space
Audition Requirements
To be considered complete, every feature twirler audition video must include the following components:
- Fundamentals: Segment demonstrating movement and dance technique, including chaîné turns, jazz runs, split leaps, chassé, and sauté.
- Repertoire: Segment demonstrating the individual technical requirements, including: one-baton, two-baton, three-baton skills as outlined above.
- Visual Routines: Segment demonstrating as many of the skills outlined above as possible while maintaining stylistic integrity.Â
- Complete performance of self-choreographed single-baton routine to Boise State’s Fight Song.
- Complete performance of self-choreographed routine for this medley.
