We are excited that you are interested in becoming a member of the Boise State University Keith Stein Blue Thunder Marching Band Color Guard! The audition process is designed to help our staff understand your current skill level before you join the band, so please don’t feel intimidated—we want you to succeed.
Live Color Guard Audition
Live audition will take place on April 12, 2026, please plan on a full day. This is an active audition, replicating what BTMB CG rehearsals are like. During the audition process, you will be evaluated in the areas of flag fundamentals, movement & marching, level of retention, performance ability and teachability.
BTMB will supply any necessary equipment
- Itinerary will include but is not limited to:
- Introduction; who we are, what we do, expectations
- warm up & stretch moving into body movement & form
- flag technique, spins, flag exercises, flag releases
- learning audition routine
- audition evaluation Â
- Please wear:
- dance type shoes
- clothes you can move in (no denim)
- your hair back out of your face
- Please bring:
- a refillable water bottle
- lunch
- snacks

Distance Color Guard Audition
Potential new members that reside outside a 100 mile radius from campus may submit their audition video via internet upload.
To be considered complete, every audition must include the following: components:
FUNDAMENTALS – record with audible metronome, 135 bpm
- Across the floor jazz run
- chasse/saute’ combo
- Fundamentals Example Video
- Repertoire – Please record the warmup routine, set to 7 Years
- Visual – record with audible metronome, 135 bpm
- Box Drill: forward 8-drop spin, left 8-double time spins, back 8-drop spin, right 8-double time spins, all steps are 8 to 5
