Purpose

To advise and provide opportunities for middle school, Jr. and Sr. High school students enrolled in Educational Talent Search to ensure transition from middle school to high school to postsecondary.

Level Scope

Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity.  Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action.  May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent plus 5 years minimum experience in similar type of work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable car, and current insurance, a cell phone, which they will be reimbursed for a percentage of calls that are work related.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office software.
  • Bilingual or multicultural
  • Previous experience working with low-income students
  • Background in financial aid, admissions, and curriculum design

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the Educational Specialist, Senior must:

  • Responsible for recruitment of potential participants and securing appropriate documentation for client eligibility (responsible for ensuring that 2/3rd of students are both 1st generation to college and meet federal income guidelines)
  • Maintain correct number of students by grade level and by school as dictated in the grant
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records for students, (including college and career plans, transcripts, test scores, scholarships, GPA, events attended, etc.)
  • Follow up concerning services provided to students (including documenting using Blumen software and Student Tracker), maintaining inventory of current information on students.
  • Ongoing review of student caseload including documentation of students who have moved left the program, etc.
  • Provide academic assistance such as class selection for both secondary and postsecondary, study skills, goal setting, time management, academic success, career interest inventories, and technology
  • Develop and maintain working and trusting relationships with participants while ensuring program services are provided as outlined in the grant and the service delivery plan, and act as an advocate whenever possible
  • Attend training as needed to gain skills to better provide services
  • Provide information to students regarding post-secondary opportunities including admissions, financial aid, scholarships, ACT/SAT/COMPASS testing, and course selection, (use of university technology systems such as Bronco web) CIS, Internet college searches, scholarship searches
  • Track student progress up to and including enrollment in postsecondary education using the National Student Clearinghouse, Blumen software, and university websites
  • Develop, coordinate and participate in parent nights, career field trips, college campus visits, financial aid nights, service learning events. Events may include evening, weekend and overnight activities.
  • Plan a minimum of one event and college visitation per year as outlined in the TPCP Policy and Procedures Manual.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Some positions may involve frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; some positions may involve moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 70 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; working in all weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels and require wearing hearing protection.
