Purpose

The Faculty Outreach and Training Liaison is responsible for strategic outreach and faculty development in service to the Research Development mission. The Faculty Outreach and Training Liaison provides outreach and communication to the campus regarding Research Development scope and services. They implement functional leadership training and fellowships to faculty for improved responsiveness and competitiveness of all sponsored projects at the University.

Level Scope

Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of areas typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years experience or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Collegial team player able to work well with diverse constituencies to facilitate collaborative relationships between different departments and other units within the University.
  • Knowledge of grant and proposal development for funded research.
  • Expert knowledge of the federal grant writing requirements and process.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience providing advanced research planning and proposal writing in academia.
  • Experience in the transfer of process information throughout an organization.
  • Skilled in interpersonal relationships, planning and communication.
  • Excellent oral, written and listening communication skills applied to individual students, groups of student, faculty and administrators.
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Knowledge of basic marketing and communication techniques.
  • Familiarity with university research administration and research policies.
  • Proven ability to build interdisciplinary alliances among administrative and academic units.
  • Strong research background, to be able to relate with researchers.

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the Faculty Liaison Research Development must:

Training and Leadership

  • Conduct 2 Fellowship programs per year to ensure that Research Funding and Development best practices are available to faculty who are early in their career, pivoting in their research agenda, or new to grant writing in general.
  • Provide other training as needed, for research faculty
    • Coordinate speakers/presenters as needed

Research Development Outreach and Facilitation

  • Serve on Boise State research planning/advisory committees and advise on development issues related to Division of Research priorities.
  • Promote strategic plan with leadership across campus to gain support of research development, expand capabilities, and ensure effective support for research projects and priorities.
  • Work with faculty and administration to become aware of and increase university capacity to develop, fund, and manage sustainable programs.
  • Facilitate team building and long-term collaboration efforts both inside and out of the Institution.
  • Convene and support affinity groups across campus to align with areas of strength and potential grand challenges.

Grants

Actively engage and lead grant writing to federal agencies and private corporations to obtain funding for new infrastructure, personnel, or education programs to meet faculty/researcher requirements and needs in Research Development.

  • 1 grants per year: PI
  • 1 grants per year: Co-PI
  • Manage large, institutional, interdisciplinary, multi-agency/organization proposal efforts, as needed.
  • Provide front end strategy for various levels of investigators and research activities.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Some positions may involve frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; some positions may involve moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 70 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; working in all weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels and require wearing hearing protection.
