Purpose

The Director of Athletic Performance Psychology (DAPP) is responsible for the development and implementation of policies, education and procedures of mental health operations for student-athletes, coaches and athletic department staff. The DAPP will function as the primary provider for counseling services for intercollegiate student-athletes. Additionally, the position will work as a member of an interdisciplinary team to establish and maintain working relationships with on-campus resources and a referral system with local mental health providers. Perform other duties as assigned.

Recognized master in professional discipline with significant impact and influence on campus policy and program development. Establishes critical strategic and operational goals; develops and implements new products, processes, standards or operational plans to achieve strategies. Regularly leads projects of critical importance to the campus; these projects carry substantial consequences of success or failure. Requires significant influence and communication with executive leadership. Problems faced are frequently complex and multidimensional, requiring broad based consideration of variables that impact multiple areas of the organization. Typically hold an Advanced Degree and 8 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience, including mastery level knowledge of level area, typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters Degree with 5 to 7 years experience or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Develop and maintain working relationships and a referral system with local mental health providers.
  • Participate in student-athlete orientations by introducing behavioral health and how to access these services.
  • Develop and maintain good standing with businesses, community groups, and organizations at the local, state and national levels to further relationships and enhance programs for student-athletes, staff and faculty.
  • Function as a clinical preceptor for students in approved, accredited programs of study related to mental health services in conjunction with the mission of higher education of Boise State University
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NCAA rules and regulations regarding compliance issues
  • Ability to perform adequate and competent evaluations in regard to health status of student-athletes

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the Director of Sports Psychologist  Manager must:

  • Assist sports medicine staff in determining when psychiatric referrals should be made for individual student-athletes requiring counseling and/or additional management of mainstream psychological disorders. Provide individual student-athletes with counseling services and/or appropriate referrals to on-campus resources, such as Counseling Services at Boise State University Health Services and/or a community provider.
  • Responsible for program development and delivery of student-athlete and staff educational, insight-oriented, and performance enhancing team interventions per needs assessment, coach directives and provider availability.
  • Consult and collaborate with UHS Counseling Services staff regarding Counseling Services initiatives and client work, as appropriate

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Some positions may involve frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; some positions may involve moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 70 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; working in all weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels and require wearing hearing protection.
