Purpose

Manage vendor or open source database software. Monitor, evaluate the integrity of data and placement of data files for the coordination of University data requirements. Provide support for the design, development and implementation of application development projects. Provide day-to-day database administration support as needed. Manage database level user and group security settings. Troubleshoot and resolve issues with the database at the server level.

Level Scope

Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self-development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems or Computer Science plus 3 years of relevant professional experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of the following software, languages and tools: PL/SQL, T-SQL and/or ANSI SQL.
  • Working knowledge of various office related software such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio.
  • Ability to set priorities and follow project schedules.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong organizational, written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Must be able to work with and communicate with people of various knowledge levels from the very technical to the casual user.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Must be very detail oriented.
  • Experience with any of the following technologies is preferred:
    • Scripting/Programming (PowerShell, php, python, ruby, Perl, etc.)
    • Familiarity with Linux/Unix systems and software
    • System administration or development experience

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the Database Administrator 1 must:

  • Act as a point of contact for various database vendors whose applications the University has licensed. Monitor databases for performance and issues using monitoring tools. Provide technical assistance to functional areas and other teams around the University on problems that may be database related.
  • Provide before, after hours and weekend support for migrations, updates, fixes and issues as needed. Participate in 24×7 on-call support rotation with an expectation to work during mission critical events.
  • Administer database-level security as needed. Address database or performance issues that are forwarded from Customer Care. Respond to Customer Care with end-user information related to any issues as well as updating status during ongoing issues.
  • Prepare regular status reports for manager. Communicate revised estimates and target dates to customers in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to published standards and procedures, such as naming conventions, security, programming conventions, code walkthroughs, testing conventions and migration processes.
  • Update operations and user documentation as needed.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

General Office – Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (Occasionally: activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (Frequently: activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. General office work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.

Travel Requirement

May be required to travel with overnight stays.
