Purpose

To operate and maintain fleet and specialized vehicles; perform related work.

Level Scope

Applies skills and job knowledge in area of specialization; may adapt procedures, operations, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment to meet needs of area of specialization; may work on non-routine tasks; resolves issues/makes working decisions within area of specialization or responsibility with minimal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid Idaho Driver’s License.

 

Good knowledge of: Idaho traffic safety laws; safe driving practices; vehicle service and preventive maintenance requirements.

 

Experience: safely operating vehicles; detecting malfunctions in vehicle mechanics and electrical system; performing minor mechanical and electrical repair work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Some positions require: experience installing aftermarket equipment on vehicles
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Ability to determine causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the Fleet Technician must:

  • Under general supervision, diagnose, maintain, repair, and service a wide variety of fleet and specialized vehicles. Service vehicles with fuel, oil, and coolant; perform preventive maintenance by checking items such as battery condition, tire air pressure, coolant and oil levels, and hydraulic and brake fluid levels; maintain vehicle records such as mileage logs, maintenance schedules, recall/warranty issues, and repairs needed and completed; observe vehicle safety and warning indicators and make needed corrections; schedule and coordinate vehicle maintenance and repair; assist with fleet vehicle repair after damage and/or repair; conduct installation and removal of auxiliary equipment; keep records related to work accomplished or products used.
  • Transport fleet vehicles to designated sites for schedule maintenance/repair; ensure fleet vehicles are delivered safely to designated sites; operate auxiliary equipment associated with vehicles.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Operate a variety of hand, power, and shop tools; physical ability to lift and carry objects weighing approximately 50 pounds; move and load or unload material for vehicles; push and maneuver heavy objects using carts, dollies, or dumpsters weighing up to 250 pounds. Incumbents will be exposed to noise, dust, cleaning solvents, battery acids, and exhaust fumes. Subject to emergency callback, evening, and weekend work.
