Purpose

To lead and instruct a variety of recreational activity classes, workshops, and events for individuals; promote program activities; perform related work.

Level Scope

Minimum Qualifications

Good knowledge of: techniques and procedures used in various indoor and outdoor physical recreational activities; safety factors and hazards involved in physical recreational activities.

Some knowledge of: instructional methods.

  • Some positions require: certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
  • Ability to develop, design, or create new applications, ideas and activities
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the Outdoor Recreation Specialist must:

  • Plans, organizes, and instructs physical activity classes such as aerobics, aquacise, and weight lifting; plans, organizes and leads indoor and outdoor activities that may include backpacking, rock climbing, cross-country skiing, kayaking, and sailing;  recommends hiring of staff; explains safety procedures and environmental concerns of wilderness activities to participants; may develop proposals for adaptive equipment; may perform recreation assessments and develop associated treatment plans.
  • Conducts fund raising activities; provides information about program activities, schedules, and requirements to the public, the media, participants and others; coordinates program activities with community agencies, organizations, and recreational resources; recommends safety procedures; develops individualized activity and exercise programs; prepares activity reports and participant progress assessments; prepares newsletters and brochures; provides work direction to volunteers; recommends purchase of equipment and supplies;

35% of Time the Outdoor Recreation Specialist

Work Environment and Physical Demands

These positions involve the physical ability to perform strenuous outdoor recreational activities. Some positions may involve lifting outdoor equipment or individuals with disabilities.

Travel Requirement

Employees are required to coordinate and participate in wilderness trips, spend periods of up to two weeks in remote areas, work weekends, and drive to various locations and late at night. May be required to pay own expenses for some recreational activities.

Additional training/education or equivalent experience, as well as business need, are required for movement into higher level jobs.
