Purpose

Instructs students in various theater shop and equipment programs such as costume technology and maintenance, production scenery and technical lab.  Uses creative and technical skills to translate designs and construction and oversee daily shop operation.

Level Scope

Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant professional experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • For Costume Shop:
    • Costume technology skills: Cutting, draping, drafting, construction, etc.
    • Knowledge of fabric, notion and accessory suppliers.
    • Familiarity with period costume construction techniques.
  • For Production Scenery and Set:
    • Experience operating power tools and shop equipment
    • Knowledge of reading and drawing architectural scale drawings
    • Good knowledge of set design, counter-weight systems and rigging
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices
  • Knowledge of bookkeeping and budget practices

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the Theater Arts Shop Teacher must:

  • Instruct students in theater shop programs and maintenance
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of shop, and storage
  • Supervise the construction of costumes or set scenery
  • Meet completion deadlines, maintain show during run of production
  • Instruct and supervise student crews

35% of Time the  Theater Arts Shop Teacher

Determined by department needs

5% of Time the  Theater Arts Shop Teacher

Perform other duties as assigned

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Some positions may involve frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; some positions may involve moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 70 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; working in all weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels and require wearing hearing protection.
