Purpose

The Spanish Language Manager acts as a liaison with upper-division Spanish faculty; with the Modern Language Resource Center, with off-site Directors from Extended Studies, and with area high school teachers of Spanish.

Level Scope

Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees at the entry or intermediate level. Functions as advisor to unit and administration and sets goals and objectives for team members for achievement of operational results. Analyzes and resolves problems through drawing from prior experiences. Interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of campus resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years experience or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Native or near-native verbal and written fluency in Spanish.
  • Native or near-native verbal and written fluency in English.
  • University-level Spanish language teaching experience.
  • Knowledge of contemporary Hispanic cultures in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Superior leadership skills to manage a diverse team of adjunct faculty.
  • Superior communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the Spanish Language Program, Manager must:

  • Teach each semester to include upper-division Spanish courses as needed in consultation with the Spanish Section Head and the Chair.
  • Supervise adjunct instructors of Spanish and Student Technology Assistant for Spanish Core Online.
  • Recruit, hire, schedule, orient, support, observe and evaluate adjunct instructors teaching lower-division Spanish in all locations and in all formats
  • Advise students with placement issues, credit for prior learning, study abroad, Spanish majors, Spanish Secondary Education majors, Spanish minors.
  • Serve on the Faculty Committee of the Department of Modern Languages and Literature.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Some positions may involve frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; some positions may involve moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 70 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; working in all weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels and require wearing hearing protection.
