Micro-“Chips and Salsa” event: Boise State’s flavorful engineering expo

Students network with attendees.

Last week, the MER Institute hosted the biannual “Chips and Salsa” event, an engaging showcase held each fall and spring semester where Boise State College of Engineering graduate students present their latest research and connect with industry leaders. This event not only highlights the innovative work of the graduate students, but also serves as a vital networking opportunity with professionals across the academic and tech sectors.

With over eight graduate students presenting their cutting-edge projects, attendees had a unique opportunity to explore topics ranging from nanogenerators and power grid monitoring to the development of circuits for medical devices. Students showcased their research and innovations to a captivated audience that included Boise State professors, program directors, and representatives from prominent industry players like Micron, American Semiconductor, and the Idaho STEM Action Center.

Following the student presentations, attendees enjoyed refreshments and gained further insights from a series of talks by MER Institute’s Dan Lamborn, President and CEO of American Semiconductor Doug Hackler, and Boise State College of Engineering Associate Dean Dr. Todd Otanicar, all of whom shared industry perspectives and advice. Networking continued over a spread of chips and salsa, courtesy of local business Salsa Boss, who generously provided the event’s signature snacks.

Beyond the exhibits, students and attendees engaged in valuable networking sessions, sharing ideas, making connections, and setting the stage for future collaborations. The Chips and Salsa event was a vibrant success, highlighting Boise State’s commitment to supporting its students and strengthening ties with industry partners. The university community is already looking forward to the next iteration of this engaging event in the spring semester!
