Prof. Phil Hartman

Phil Hartman is an adjunct faculty member of the Boise State University Music Department and is the former Director of Bands at Centennial High School in Boise, Idaho. At Boise State,  he instructs classes in the Music Education Department and supervises instrumental music student teachers. He has also given countless Student Leadership workshops throughout Idaho.  He previously taught at Centennial High School for 27 years, where he was named Centennial  High School’s “Teacher of the Year,” District III Band Director of the year, District III Music  Educator of the Year and Idaho Music Educator of the Year. Mr. Hartman is a member of the  Sousa Legion of Honor, presented by the John Philip Sousa Foundation, and he and his wife, Wendy, were given the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts by Boise Mayor David Bieter. 

He has previously served as the President of the District III Music Educators, Band Chairman for  IMEA, Coordinator for the Idaho All-State Band and director of the Junior Idaho Youth Wind  Symphony. He is a member of the Centennial High School Hall of Fame and the Idaho Music  Educators Hall of fame. Under his direction, the Centennial High School Band program achieved many awards and honors throughout the Northwest, including three performances at the Idaho  Music Educators All-State Conference, one performance at the All-Northwest Music Conference in Bellevue, Washington, and awards in symphonic, marching, and jazz band. He currently has former students teaching band at all grade levels from elementary through university.

He is married to Wendy Hartman, who also serves in the Music Education Department at Boise State  University. They have two children, Angela and Ryan (both teachers), and three grandchildren,  Logan, Gavin, and Baylee.
