Emily Wakild recently published a chapter in A Living Past: Environmental Histories of Latin America, a volume of essays about Latin American environmental history edited by Claudia Leal, John Soluri and José Augusto Padua.
Wakild’s chapter, “A Panorama of Parks: Deep Nature, Depopulation, and the Cadence of Conserving Nature,” explores the long and varied traditions of nature conservation in Latin America by providing both a timeline for efforts, a map of protected areas, and a discussion of the varied challenges faced in particular cases. She situates nature conservation within a discussion of the environmental and colonial processes that have shaped nature in the region.
The book will be published in Spanish and Portuguese in 2019.
