Gautam Basu Thakur presented a paper titled “‘Topsy-Turvy Gaze’: Reading Sukumar Ray’s Abol Tabol [Gibberish-Gibberish] with Lacan” at the recent Modern Languages Association annual conference in Chicago. Part of a roundtable-panel on reinterpreting nonsense, Basu Thakur’s paper explicated Lacan’s thesis that nonsense provokes “truths that are certain even if not self-evident” through a reading of Sukumar’s nonsense works.
