Bronco Learning Commons builds student success

Students engaging at the Bronco Learning Commons

Albertsons Library is partnering with the Advising and Academic Support Center to create The Bronco Learning Commons. This project aims to create a welcoming environment, free from judgment, where students are encouraged to leave insecurities behind and trust that staff and peers are there to help them gain confidence, improve their academics and teach them how to tap into the resources they need to be successful.

The Learning Commons is a vibrant, nurturing space centrally located for convenience on the library’s first floor. The area is set up with white boards and white board tables to encourage collaboration.

“Conversation is fundamental in the library. It’s how we learn,” said Tod Colegrove, the library’s dean. “Traditionally, that ‘learning’ takes place when we have a ‘conversation’ with the author of the textbook we are reading. But, more often, the learning happens when talking to a professor, a peer, or even a barber.”

The partnership provides interdisciplinary academic support from staff, faculty and peer academic consultants, with the Advising and Academic Support Center working across campus to bring in instructors and academic support partners who represent a wide variety of subjects.

“AASC is so excited to partner with the library,” said Matt Schmasow, associate director of academic support. “We truly seek to provide an academic support space where all of our students, staff and instructors feel welcome. Albertsons Library is an amazing collaborator for this vision. We can’t wait to grow this space into a hub for student success.”

Pop-up sessions

Scheduled “pop up” sessions on topics like time management, note taking, test prep, study strategies and campus resources will occur regularly. The next sessions, teaching the nuances of note-taking is from Tuesday, Jan. 17 from 1:15 – 3:15 pm and Wednesday, Jan. 18 from 9 – 11 am.

Office hours at the Bronco Learning Commons

Faculty and teaching assistants are encouraged to hold office hours in the Bronco Learning Commons space. Email with a suggested schedule.
