Buie performs, presents masterclass in Austria

Associate Professor Zach Buie recently collaborated with Kevin Whalen, associate professor of trumpet and jazz studies at Texas Tech University. Buie and Whalen presented two days of masterclasses and rehearsal clinics to middle school and high school bands at the American International School Vienna. They provided guidance on performance techniques and musical expression. They also shared a workshop with elementary school students entitled “A Musical Life,” exploring diverse career paths in music.

Buie performed several jazz works with Whalen for each class and ensemble during the two day visit. The trumpet duo was invited by the Director of Orchestras Mary Bouras. Buie and Whalen culminated their time in Vienna with a performance for two trumpets and organ at the Reformierte Stadtkirche, an 18th century church in the city center where they collaborated with tenor David Corcoran, organist Tomasz Piętak and violinst Christian David Gonzalez Caceres.
