Doug Twitchell, chair of the Department of Information Technology, and Christie Fuller, professor of information technology management, have been accepted for publication in the Journal of Educational and Psychological Measurement for their paper titled “The Impact of Attentiveness Interventions on Survey Data.” Their research explores how strategies designed to improve participant attentiveness influence the quality of survey responses.

Twitchell and Fuller’s study investigates the effects of attentiveness interventions, including the use of a factual manipulation check, on survey data collected in both laboratory and real-world settings. They also incorporate novel measures such as video engagement and mouse movement tracking to gauge attentiveness. Their findings reveal that while these interventions can improve attentiveness, they do not significantly affect levels of common method variance. This distinction is critical for researchers aiming to enhance data quality without introducing new biases or assumptions.
