The Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research will take place July 23-24 via Zoom. Register as an attendee.

The annual event showcases mentored undergraduate research taking place across disciplines at Idaho colleges and universities. The conference provides a forum for students, faculty, staff and the community to share ideas through keynote speakers, research talks and networking events.

The student poster presentations will be unique this year, said Donna Llewellyn, executive director of the Institute for STEM and Diversity Initiatives and a conference organizer. The posters will be displayed online (https://symposium.foragerone.com) and will be available for viewers for two weeks rather than only for the duration of the conference.

“Also, for attendees of the conference, we will be having Zoom breakout room discussions with the student researchers where they can deliver their ‘elevator pitches’ about their work and answer questions — just like if they were standing with their posters in the ballroom,” said Llewellyn.

Program topics include “How and why to get involved in research while an undergraduate,” “Graduate school: the real story,” “Strategies for a successful research experience” and more.

“For many of the student presenters from across our state, the past few months have proven challenging as they pursue undergraduate research opportunities,” said Michal Temkin Martinez, an associate professor of linguistics in the Department of English and a conference organizer. “One of the main benefits they normally enjoy while working with others in research groups and labs, the sense of belonging to a community of scholars, is much harder to replicate in a remote environment. We hope that the remote version of ICUR will help provide them with a keen sense that they are not alone in their pursuit to create and curate knowledge.”

The ICUR was officially launched at Boise State in 2014, but a Summer Undergraduate Research Conference was held at the university as far back as 2012.
