Several College of Health Sciences students and COHS-affiliated student organizations were honored on May 2 at the annual Campus Awards Ceremony, which was sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs.
The Student Nurses Association (SNA) and Timmy Global Health were nominated for the Group Commitment to Service award, which Timmy Global Health won. The Group Commitment to Service award recognizes an outstanding student group that has demonstrated the Boise State Shared Values of respect, citizenship and care through their service to others. Megan Spurny, faculty in the Department of Respiratory Care, is the faculty advisor for Timmy Global Health and led the group on their inaugural service trip to the Dominican Republic in January.
SNA was also nominated for the Student Organization of the Year award, which is presented to an outstanding student group that has shown leadership and involvement on campus and in the community. The nominated groups represent or promote one or more of Boise State’s Shared Values of academic excellence, caring, citizenship, fairness, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness. Though SNA did not win this award, the faculty and staff of the School of Nursing remain very proud of the club members for their hard work and their service to the community. Nursing faculty members Marty Downey and Jean Anderson serve as faculty advisors of SNA.
Additionally, several College of Health Sciences students were nominated for individual awards:
- Jamie Nguyen, a health science studies student with an emphasis in public health, and Mason Shaw, an eighth semester nursing student, were nominated for the HERO award, which honors individuals who have demonstrated a strong commitment to addressing the issues of social justice, power, privilege and oppression through their participation in the Making Justice Visible certificate program.
- Melisa Becirovic, a health science studies student with an emphasis in general health, Wenyi Chen, a seventh semester nursing student, and Dorothy O’Mealia, a health science studies student with an emphasis in science, were nominated for the Outstanding Student Employee of the Year award. This award recognizes an outstanding student for commitment, leadership and service in the workplace at Boise State. Student nominees exemplify strong leadership skills, professionalism and a willingness to grow and learn.
- Stephanie Northouse, a fourth semester nursing student and the program assistant for the Health Professions Residential College, was nominated for the Emerging Leader award. This award is presented to a student who shows strong growing potential in leadership development and commitment to serving others.
