Steven Zeller found mentorship and innovation at Boise State

For Steven Zeller, a student in Boise State University’s fully online Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning (OPWL) program, graduate school has been more than an academic journey — it’s been a professional transformation.

Filling in the gaps and gaining confidence

Zeller works full-time as a remote instructional designer. While already experienced in designing online learning, he noticed skill gaps that were limiting his ability to advance.

“The OPWL program has really helped fill in some of the gaps I was missing,” Zeller said. “I hadn’t done a lot of project management or change management — but now people come to me at work for advice and guidance in those areas. I’m seen as more than just an instructional designer. I’ve become a mentor.”

Zeller credits the online program with helping him build a broader skill set that allows him to contribute in new ways within his organization. The curriculum’s real-world focus on technology, collaboration and business leadership has helped him elevate his role.

A supportive, close-knit community

One of the standout aspects of Zeller’s experience has been the support and connections he has found with faculty and fellow students.

“The Boise State faculty, especially in the OPWL program, have been fabulous. I couldn’t ask for better professors,” he said. “It honestly feels like being part of a family.”

Zeller notes that group work and regular collaboration help forge strong relationships among students — many of whom were also balancing careers, families and personal milestones.

“The program really builds community,” he said. “You’re sharing life experiences together while working toward your goals. I think one of the best things I’ve learned is how this program fosters empathy. That really helps build camaraderie.”

Flexibility that fits your life

As a working professional with a full family life, Zeller needed a program that could adapt to his schedule.

“I have a wife and three grown kids. We live a busy life,” he said. “The other day, we were out on a walk, and I told her I only have one semester left. She couldn’t believe how quickly it went by.”

As he nears graduation, Zeller reflects on what he and his classmates have accomplished — and how their work is already making a difference.

“It’s been amazing to see how students in all these different professional settings come together to create successful projects and actually change how business is done,” he said. “It’s exciting to be a part of that.”
