Video Transcript: Fire Captain Ashley Rosenbaum
[Music] AD: video pans around a firetruck named ‘Whitney’
[Ashley] My name is Ashley Rosenbaum I am a captain with Boise Fire Department. I graduated from Boise State University in 2005 with a degree in public health.
[Ashley] Classes that I took that I really enjoyed nutrition, exercise physiology, kind of health and wellness program planning and implementation I think are helpful internally here with the fire department. I’ve been able to help with recruit fitness, we do a lot of injury prevention, this is a physically demanding job and it’s just really important that we’re not only physically healthy but we’re mentally strong, but I think also we have an opportunity to help people at a more basic level as EMTs and first responders.
[Ashley] Even just routine calls that we respond to I’m kind of the eyes as my driver and firefighter are helping someone I kind of oversee the whole scene and make sure that everyone is safe.
[Ashley] Every October is fire safety month and we visit elementary schools so we get to talk to kids and we get to do fire prevention and fire safety talks and it is so fun. That’s probably one of the most rewarding things that we get to do, we get to be out in the community and meet with kids and get them excited about fire safety.
[Ashley] I was always really passionate about health and fitness, health education especially, there’s just so many ways that you can use this degree, you just have to find something that you’re passionate about and pursue that, whether it’s being a firefighter, a first responder, or working in a hospital I mean there’s just so many different routes so I’d say just find what you’re passionate about.
