Credit for Prerequisites Not Taken

Credit for prerequisites not taken only applies to undergraduate students.

Depending on background or experience, you may be allowed to take some courses without first taking a prerequisite course. In some cases, you may also be able to receive credit for the prerequisite course. Academic departments determine which courses can qualify for this credit.

How to Receive Credit for Prerequisites Not Taken

  1. Contact and obtain approval from the appropriate academic department.
  2. Complete the Credit for Prior Learning form and submit the form to the appropriate department. There is a fee of $20 per course to apply for credit for prerequisites not taken. The fee is the same whether you are a full-time or part-time student.
  3. Complete the advanced course. If you complete the advanced course and earn a grade of C- or higher, the credit for the prerequisite not taken will be posted.
  4. You will receive an email when your prerequisite credit is processed.

Grade on Transcript

Credit for Prerequisites Not Taken will be recorded on your Boise State transcript with a grade of Pass (P). The Pass (P) grade is only transcribed if you complete the advanced course and earn a grade of C- or higher. If your score is too low, no entry is made on your transcript.

Limitations

Credit for prerequisites not taken is only posted to the current or future semesters. It cannot be used to repeat a class previously graded. You may earn up to one-third (1/3) of your total credits required for graduation through credit for prior learning.
